The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory on Thursday to raise awareness about the dangers of taking prescription drugs such as sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra and other drugs for erectile dysfunction. The advisory came after the agency's medical advisory panel recommended that patients taking sildenafil should not be permitted to purchase the drugs. Sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra, is a treatment for erectile dysfunction. The FDA said it has not found any reports of serious adverse events associated with the use of sildenafil, but the agency does not recommend that patients use the drugs for recreational purposes.
In a letter to the FDA on Thursday, the agency said the warning was based on the evidence the agency has received indicating that the drugs were associated with the increased risk of heart attack and stroke, especially in patients who were taking other medications for erectile dysfunction. The agency also recommended that patients should be aware that sildenafil and tadalafil are similar medications and should not be used together in any way.
“Our public health advisory is based on the evidence that the FDA has received, and that the FDA is aware of the dangers associated with sildenafil and tadalafil, and that there is no indication of this with respect to the risk of cardiovascular events associated with the use of these medications,” said Dr. Michael K. Thompson, director of the F. D. A.’s Office of Public Health. “We are urging Canadians to consider their health care provider’s advice on the use of these drugs. We are also urging the public to consider the risks associated with taking these drugs.”
Dr. David ChiricahSmith, director of the Public Health Advisory Board for the FDA, said it’s important for patients to be aware of the serious risks associated with taking prescription drugs such as sildenafil and tadalafil. “While we don’t know whether the risks of using these drugs are higher, the risks of taking these drugs are higher when using prescription medications that are used to treat ED and other sexual health problems,” he said. “It is important for patients to be aware of the risks associated with taking these drugs, and to report any adverse events to their physician, who can help manage these risks.”
K. J. D'Ancona, director of the F. A.’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer, said there are a few safety concerns for patients taking sildenafil and tadalafil, but that the risks are higher when the drugs are taken for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“The risks associated with the use of these drugs are also higher when the drugs are used to treat erectile dysfunction,” he said. “It is important for patients to be aware of the risks associated with taking these drugs, and to report any adverse events to their physician, who can manage these risks.”
